The Engineering file doesn't prevent the GPS error, but helps in troubleshooting. Engineering files contains supplemental information, usually data that aren't that useful for research. In this particular case it contains the raw GPS data that can be parsed to create the GPS coordinates. Without this information it's hard to work the math backward to get the actual raw data from the already produced GPS coordinates. So you don't have to rework your processing scripts. I can't recall if in the case of BuoyProfiler whether or not the Engineering data are separate from the data file, they are in newer version of uProfile though.
